Le supérieur Phra Khrou Athornphratchaanaat (autrefois appelé "phra Alognkot") a fondé le mouroir en 1992. Il sentait déjà à l'époque l'importance que prendrait le sida dans son pays. Ce bonze su aussi prendre conscience dès le départ de la terrible exclusion sociale dont les séropositifs avait/ont à souffrir en Thaïlande.

Il eut à se confronter à beaucoup d'opposants.

• Dans le milieu ecclésiastique d'abord (ce genre de travail y est jugé peu compatible avec les exigences de la vie monastique),
• Le village proche ensuite (qui craignait la contamination par les moustiques).
• Le milieu médical aussi qui ne voyait pas d'un bon œil ce redresseur de tord rentrer sur son terrain…
• ...et avec des journalistes parfois, qui aiment dénigrer ceux sans qui rien de grand ne se fait.

Finalement, contre vents et marées, ce bonze est devenu une célébrité dans son pays. On devrait dire un "mythe" plutôt qu'une "célébrité". Il est sans cesse aux quatre coins de la Thaïlande à la recherche de donations… et il les obtient. C'est grâce à lui, et rien qu'à lui, que le mouroir peut continuer à travailler. Pas de subside de l'état ou quasi pas… Il continue d'assumer avec persévérance ce rôle étonnant qui en fait une figure importante de la Thaïlande contemporaine.

The abbot Phra Khrou Athornphratchaanaat (former "Phra Alorgnkot") founded his hospice in 1992. At that time, the young monk felt already the importance that AIDS would take in his country. Before all the others, he was also concern with the terrifying social exclusion of which the HIV patients were/are suffering in Thailand.

The abbot had to confront himself with a lot of objectors

• In the ecclesiastical environment first: this kind of work was judged not compatible with the requirements of the monastic life.
• With the nearest village then (that feared the contamination by the mosquitoes)
• With the medical environment also which was not exactly happy to see his moral figure entering in their territories
• ... And with some journalists who sometimes like to disparage those without who nothing big is induce.

Finally the abbot of Wat PhraBatNamPhu became a celebrity in his country. One should say a "myth" rather than a "celebrity". He is constantly travelling through Thailand to look for donations. and he get some. It is thanks to him and nobody else that the hospice can continue to survive and provide free cares for poor patients. (State do not provide substantial financial support). He continues to assume with perseverance this astonishing mission that makes him become one of the main figure of the contemporary Thailand.
