CHLORAMPHENICOL

Main indication,

- Thyphoid

- When failure of other antobiotics, (including infection of skin, brain...). Choice between chloramphenicol and metronidazole...or both!

Dose

- 500mgr x 4

- Maximum is 4gr a day.

- Chloramphenicol should preferably be taken with a full glass (240 mL) of water on an empty stomach (either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) to optimize absorption.

Possible side/adverse effect

- Gastrointestinal reaction (diarrhea; nausea; vomiting)

- Blood dyscrasias (pale skin; sore throat and fever; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness)


+ can be reversible bone marrow depression (dose-related) usually reversible when chloramphenicol is discontinued.

+ can be idiosyncratic aplastic anemia. not related to dose or duration of therapy onset of aplasia may not occur until weeks or months after treatment with chloramphenicol has been discontinued.

 

Other informations

Store below 40 °C , preferably between 15 and 30 °C. Store in a tight, light-resistant container. Protect from freezing.
