AMPICILLIN injection

Main indication

- Severe pneumonia

- Meningitis

- Septicemia (ampi + genta)

- PID & Peritonitis (+ genta + metro)

Dose

1gr x 4 Intramuscular (or intravenous... but we do not recommend in an hospice)

Can inject more (but less than 14gr a day!!!)

Patients with know kidney problems do not require a reduction in dose

Attention!!!

Anaphylaxis reaction is possible (fast or irregular breathing; puffiness or swelling around face; shortness of breath; sudden, severe decrease in blood pressure) !!! Adrenalin/dexa must be in environement when inject for the first time!

Possible side/adverse effect

Exfoliative dermatitis (red, scaly skin)

serum sickness-like reactions (skin rash; joint pain; fever)

skin rash, hives, or itching

 

Cross allergy with other drugs of same family: pen, amoxy, cloxa...

Other informations

Store below 40 °C preferably between 15 and 30 °C Protect the reconstituted solution from freezing.

After reconstitution for intramuscular or direct intravenous use, solutions retain their potency for 1 hour.

Extemporaneous admixtures of ampicillin and gentamycin may result in substantial mutual inactivation. If these groups of antibacterials are administered concurrently, they should be administered in separate sites at least 1 hour apart. Do not mix them in the same intravenous bag, bottle, or tubing.
