ITRACONAZOLE

Main indication,

- Skin generalised or severe mycose (penicilliosis, tinea...) But for crypto, the first choice should be fluconazole.

- failure of fluconazole treatment (no cross resistance between fluco and itraconazole)

Dose

- 200mg x 2

- Antacids, anticholinergics/antispasmodics, histamine H 2-receptor antagonists, omeprazole, or sucralfate will increase the pH of the stomach and decrease the absorption of itraconazole. patients should be advised to take these medications at least 2 hours after taking itraconazole

-Itraconazole capsules should be taken with food to increase absorption of the medication.

Drug interactions

- itraconazole increase level of phenitoin, digoxin, rifabutin

- rifabutin, phenobarbital, phenitoin decrease itraconazole level

- Isoniazid or Rifampicin may decrease concentrations of itraconazole ; this may lead to clinical failure or relapse

Possible side/adverse effect

- GI intolerance

- rash

- hepatitis

Contraindications

azole should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing liver function impairment, those who have experienced liver toxicity with other medications, or a history of alcoholism


Other informations

-Store below 40 °C , preferably between 15 and 30 °C, in a well-closed container.
